Kathy Patricia Ireland Schwieger (March 19, 1942 – May 6, 2018)
Kathy was born in Aurora, Illinois to George and Gertrude Ireland and raised in Skokie. She grew up winning awards for both her beauty and brains. Kathy attended Loyola University in Chicago and was the proud Captain of the Cheerleading Squad for the 1963 Loyola Rambler Basketball team, coached by her father, the legendary and groundbreaking coach, George Ireland. That Loyola team is still the only Illinois team to ever win the NCAA Championship.
Kathy was a model, often working at the Auto and Boat shows, and was named Miss Skokie ‘60-‘61. She earned a degree in Education at Loyola and became an elementary school teacher. She was an inspiring and energetic teacher that positively impacted the lives of countless students.
Kathy married Dr. Robert Schwieger and moved to Friars Cove in Addison. She was an early member of that close-knit community where friends become more like family and continued to live there until the end. When her daughter, Stacy Ann, was born in 1971 Kathy earned her most treasured title – Mom. Anyone who saw the two of them together couldn’t help but feel the fierce and loyal bond between them. Kathy passed along her love of animals, traveling, card games and laughing to Stacy and they enjoyed all of those things together right to the end. Kathy and Stacy visited their favorite vacation spot, the Don Cesar in Florida, in April.
For the last 14 years Kathy held one of her favorite jobs as the “Hostess with the Mostess” - also known as the “Pit Bull” - at Trackside. She loved her customers and co-workers and was grateful she could continue working up until a few weeks before she passed away. Her stories of her Trackside crew are warm memories for us all to remember with smiles.
Besides her adored daughter, Stacy Ann, Kathy is remembered by her loyal brother, Michael Ireland, and nieces and nephews, and many friends and neighbors. She was a strong force in the lives of everyone who had the fortune to know her, and her passing is felt as a great loss to many.Memorial Visitation Sunday, May 20 1-4 PM with a personal prayer with eulogy at 3 pm at Humes Funeral Home. For info, www.HumesFH.com or 630.628.8808. https://www.tributeslides.com/tributes/show/5568GFTNRPQFGJHM
